Reproductive Endocrinologists:

Infertility Specialists Who Might Have an Answer for You

Have you and your partner tried to conceive for over a year with no success? Are you over 35? Do you have a known medical problem that affects your ability to become pregnant or stay pregnant? A regular OB/GYN doctor might be able to help. However, if you are in your late thirties or older, or if no factors can be identified as contributing to your infertility and you are tired of dragging yourself from one OB/GYN office to another in the hopes of finding an answer, it might be time to turn to the experts. Pick up the phone and schedule a consultation with a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist. It might very well be the best decision you’d make in a lifetime.

Reproductive endocrinologists are OB/GYN doctors specially trained to diagnose and treat female and male infertility and a host of other conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothalamic pituitary dysfunction, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia among others. In addition to drug therapy, they can perform intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and various surgical corrections of anatomical problems.

The skill and success rate of reproductive endocrinologists varies, and I recommend you search for reviews online before you make your selection. Do not automatically choose based on location (proximity to home or office) or cost. Quoted prices, even when given as a range, can be deceptive and will heavily depend on your health insurance and personalized treatment plan (type and quantity of medications, number of follow-up visits, types of tests). That said, don’t assume that your treatment will necessarily be costly. An experienced reproductive endocrinologist may be able to correctly identify the root cause of your infertility during your very first visit, and the treatment may turn out to be as inexpensive as a couple of hundred dollars.
